APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate. It is the true cost of borrowing money for a year, combining the interest rate and any extra fees into one single number. If you are comparing two loans or credit cards, the one with the lower APR will almost always cost you less money.

## Why does APR matter?

When you take out a loan, the lender doesn't just charge you interest. They often add on processing fees, application fees, or origination fees. If you only look at the interest rate, a loan might look cheap, but the hidden fees could make it expensive.

APR solves this problem. It forces lenders to show you the total yearly cost of the loan, including most of those extra fees, expressed as a percentage. This makes it incredibly easy to compare different offers side-by-side.

## How APR works on credit cards

For credit cards, the APR is usually just the interest rate you pay if you do not pay off your full balance each month. \(Most credit cards don't roll their annual fees into the APR.\)

Here is the most important thing to know about credit card APR: you only pay it if you carry a balance from one month to the next. If you pay your credit card bill in full and on time every single month, your effective interest rate is 0%, no matter how high the card's official APR is.

## How APR works on loans

For mortgages, car loans, and personal loans, the APR gives you a much clearer picture of the total cost than the interest rate alone.

  * **Interest Rate:** What the bank charges you just to borrow the money.
  * **Fees:** Extra charges to set up the loan.
  * **APR:** The interest rate plus the fees, rolled into one percentage.

## What to do next

The next time you are offered a loan or a credit card, ignore the interest rate and look straight for the APR. Use it as your primary tool to compare offers.
