The fastest way to pay off debt is to stop adding to it, pick one target debt, and throw every extra dollar at it while paying the minimums on everything else. You don't need a complicated spreadsheet or an expensive advisor to get out of debt. You just need a plan you can actually stick to.

## Step 1: Face the Total

You cannot fix a problem you refuse to look at. The very first step is to write down exactly what you owe.

Take a piece of paper and write down every single debt you have. For each one, list the total balance, the **interest rate** \(the extra money the lender charges you for borrowing\), and the **minimum payment** \(the smallest amount you are allowed to pay each month to keep the account in good standing\).

## Step 2: Pick One Target

If you try to pay off five debts at once, you will feel like you are getting nowhere. Instead, pick one debt to be your main target. There are two simple ways to choose:

  * **Smallest balance first:** Pick the debt with the lowest total amount. Paying this off quickly gives you a fast win and builds momentum.
  * **Highest interest rate first:** Pick the debt that charges you the most in interest. This saves you the most money in the long run.

Pick the method that keeps you motivated. \(We break down this choice more in our guide on [Debt Snowball vs. Avalanche](/debt-snowball-vs-avalanche)\).

## Step 3: Pay Minimums on Everything Else

This is where the magic happens. You must continue to make the minimum payments on all of your debts so you don't get hit with late fees or damage your credit. But every single extra dollar you can find goes entirely toward your one target debt.

Once that target debt is gone, you take the money you were paying toward it and add it to the minimum payment of your next target debt. The payments grow larger and faster as you go.

## Step 4: Stop Adding to the Pile

You cannot dig your way out of a hole while still using a shovel. If you are trying to pay off credit cards fast, you have to stop using them while you follow this plan. Switch to cash or a debit card so you only spend money you actually have in the bank.

If you struggle with overspending, setting up a simple [beginner budget](/how-to-budget-for-beginners) is the best way to keep yourself on track.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Should I save money or pay off debt first?

You need a small starter emergency fund before you attack your debt aggressively. Aim to save a basic cushion—often around a month's worth of expenses—so that a sudden flat tire or medical bill doesn't force you to borrow more money. Once you have that cushion, put everything else toward the debt. See our [guide on emergency funds](/emergency-fund-how-much) for more.

### Can I pay off debt if I have no extra money?

If your expenses equal your income, you have to change the math. You can either lower your expenses \(by cutting subscriptions, cooking at home, or finding a cheaper living situation\) or increase your income \(by picking up extra hours, selling items, or taking a side job\). Even an extra $50 a month speeds up your progress.

### Does paying off debt fast hurt my credit score?

Paying off your debt lowers your total balances, which generally improves your credit score. If you pay off and close an old credit card, your score might drop slightly for a short time, but the peace of mind of having zero debt is far more valuable than temporarily maximizing a score.

## What to Do Next

Make a list of your debts today. Write down every balance, minimum payment, and interest rate. Then, choose your first target. You don't have to have it all figured out right now—you just have to take the first step. For more strategies, explore our full section on [Debt payoff methods](/debt).
