What practical steps raise a credit score? We cover the main factors, quick wins vs. longer-term habits, and what to avoid when trying to improve your credit score.

The fastest way to raise your credit score is to pay down any high credit card balances so you are using less than 30% of your available limit. Beyond that, improving your score is simply a matter of paying every bill on time, every single month, without exception.

## What actually moves your score?

Your credit score is mostly determined by two things: whether you pay your bills on time \(payment history\) and how much of your available credit you are using \(amounts owed\). Together, these make up nearly two-thirds of your score.

The rest is based on how long you have had credit, how often you apply for new accounts, and whether you have a healthy mix of different loan types. If you want a better score, you need to focus on those first two big factors.

## Quick wins: Steps that help right now

While building credit is generally a slow process, there are a few things you can do to see a score increase in a matter of weeks.

  * **Pay down high balances.** If your credit card limit is $1,000 and your balance is $900, your score will be much lower than if your balance was $100. Try to get all card balances below 30% of their limit. Below 10% is even better.
  * **Ask for a higher credit limit.** Call your credit card company and ask if they can increase your limit without doing a "hard pull" on your credit. If they say yes, your total available credit goes up. If your spending stays the same, your percentage of credit used goes down instantly.
  * **Check for errors.** Get a free copy of your credit report and look for mistakes, like late payments you actually made on time or accounts you never opened. Disputing these errors and getting them removed can quickly boost your score.

## Long-term habits: Building a strong foundation

A high credit score is built on consistency. These habits will naturally push your score higher over time:

  * **Never miss a payment.** This is the golden rule. Set up automatic payments for the minimum amount due on every account. A single missed payment can drop your score by dozens of points.
  * **Keep old accounts open.** The older your credit accounts are, the better. Even if you no longer use your very first credit card, keep it open \(as long as it does not charge an annual fee\) to show a long, stable history.
  * **Space out new applications.** Every time you apply for new credit, your score takes a small temporary hit. Only apply for new loans or cards when you actually need them.

## What to avoid

Some well-intentioned financial moves can actually damage your credit score. Be careful not to make these common mistakes:

  * **Closing old cards to "tidy up."** Closing an account reduces your total available credit and eventually shortens your credit history, both of which can lower your score.
  * **Maxing out your cards, even if you pay them off.** Credit bureaus often check your balance before you pay your bill. If your card is maxed out when they check, your score will drop, even if you pay it to zero a few days later. Pay early in the month to keep the reported balance low.
  * **Ignoring late bills.** If you cannot make a payment, call the lender immediately. They will often work with you. Ignoring the bill guarantees it will be reported as late.

## What to do next

Log into your bank or credit card accounts today and set up automatic payments for the minimum due on every single bill. Then, look at your credit card balances. If any are over 30% of their limit, make a plan to pay them down as quickly as possible.
