The fastest way to build credit from scratch is to open a secured credit card, buy one small thing each month, and pay the bill in full. No fancy tricks, no carrying a balance — just showing a history of paying on time.

## What does it mean to have no credit?

When you have no credit, it simply means there isn't enough information about your borrowing history for a credit score to be calculated. A credit score is a number that tells lenders how likely you are to pay back money you borrow. Without this number, it can be hard to rent an apartment, buy a car, or even get a mobile phone contract.

Building a credit score is like building a reputation: it takes time, consistency, and a track record of doing what you say you will do.

## Secured credit cards: The easiest starting point

A secured credit card is a credit card backed by a cash deposit you pay upfront. If you put down a $200 deposit, your credit limit is $200. Because your deposit acts as a safety net for the lender, these cards are much easier to get than regular credit cards.

  * **Apply for a secured card.** Look for one with no annual fee.
  * **Pay the deposit.** This money is usually returned to you once you close the account or upgrade to a regular card.
  * **Use it for one small subscription.** Put a single low-cost monthly bill on the card, like a streaming service.
  * **Set up automatic payments.** Have the card paid off in full automatically from your bank account every month.

## Credit-builder loans: Building credit while you save

A credit-builder loan works differently from a normal loan. Instead of giving you money upfront, the lender puts the loan amount into a locked savings account. You make small monthly payments, which the lender reports to the credit bureaus. Once you've paid off the loan, the money in the savings account is unlocked and belongs to you.

This is a great option if you struggle to save money, because it forces you to build a small savings pot while simultaneously improving your credit history.

## Becoming an authorized user: Riding on someone else's good habits

If a family member or partner has a credit card and a history of paying on time, they can add you to their account as an authorized user. This means their good credit history on that specific card is added to your credit file.

You do not even need to be given a physical card to use. Just being listed on an account that is paid on time every month will steadily build your score from scratch.

## The one rule that matters most

Whether you use a secured card, a credit-builder loan, or become an authorized user, there is one non-negotiable rule: **pay on time, every single time.**

Payment history is the single largest factor in your credit score. Missing a payment by even a few days can undo months of hard work. Always set up automatic payments for at least the minimum amount due, so you never forget.

## What to do next

Pick one method to start building credit today. If you have a few hundred dollars saved, open a secured credit card with no annual fee. Use it to pay for one small thing a month, and pay it off completely. Consistency is all you need.
